The history of Jaipur takes us to some three centuries back
in time, when Sawai Jai Singh II found it difficult to accommodate
the increasing population of his state in Amber. He was looking
for a better place where he can shift his capital. He liked
a place about 11 kilometres from Amber and decided to build
his capital city. And so the city of Jaipur (named after his
name) was conceived.
The king wanted to build the city according to the basic
rules of architecture that were mentioned in the ancient treatise
Shilpa Shastra. He commissioned Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, an
architect from Bengal to execute his plans. After years of
planning and hard work, the king saw his dream fulfilled.
